Even some mid-size companies did this and are regretting that decision. The up front cost was much lower but they have discovered that lost revenues and customer frustration because of frequent systems crashes is costing them more then if they had invested in a highly reliable system. So they are switching to products like Oracle and running it on Unix boxes.
