It may depend on the default domain that is defined on the client side.

Within NT this can be found in the Properties for the TCP/IP protocol under Network. Within UNIX it can be found in /etc/resolv.conf . Say the Names Server returns a short name. If the DNS can not resolve it, it will append the domain and try again.

We are running Names Server, and have always specified the long names. This ensures that the connection can not be impacted by a bad/unexpected setup of the client machine.
