An application developed with OCI80 requires Net8 on the client to connect to a remote database. Note that it is *not* a requirement that a Net8 listener is running on the remote database, nor is it a requirement that the remote database be Oracle8.
Net8 is backward-compatible with SQL*Net versions 2.0.14 and later. This means that Net8 clients can transparently connect to an Oracle7 database. It also means that existing SQL*Net clients can connect to an Oracle8 database. This two-way backward compatibility allows customers easy migration from Oracle7 to Oracle8 environments.
