Assigning Field Size

Hello,

Usually I create tables in Oracle Navigator but recently I created a table with SQL*Plus. So I didn't (have to) specify field sizes and or precisions. Neither the type of data (number, char etc.). Since the field was a result of a multplication I assume that Oracle automatically assigned NUMBER.

But I wonder what the effect is of not assigning a fixed field size/precision to a field. Will it affect performance or something? Does anyone know?

Thanx,
