Checking for table existance

Okay, I thought this would be really easy when I started out, and maybe it is, I don't know.
I'd like to check for the existance of a table before I create it (because otherwise we get an error message, and while the error message is not a problem, they tend to cause people to panic), however PL/SQL doesn't not like the SQL "create" statement, so I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Erica
