Executing system commands (shell scripts) from PL/SQL

Is there an easy way to execute system utilities/shell scripts such as "sendmail" from within a PL/SQL block. The requirement is to have a database trigger that will fire off an e-mail message based on some condition being met.

Also, is there a way to send attachments through sendmail. (probably not the right forum to ask this, but....)

Any help will be appreciated.
