We have not been successful in getting this to work. After a bit of research we found that the version of the DB we we're using was 8.0.3, and the JDBC thin driver only support 8.0.4. The release notes for the jdbc driver mention that the driver does not work with oracle DB versions earlier than 8.0.4

Oracle has just released v 8.0.4 to production, which means the new DB software should start shipping in a couple of weeks (at least that's what oracle told me last week). They don't know when it might be available for trial/testing.

Because of this, we have decided to revert to oracle 7.3.3.x with the appropriate thin jdbc driver, and will move to 8.x once things become more widely available and tested. 7.3.3.x has proved to be very stable anyhow...
