Beginner Validation

Can someone help me with this problem?

I have a table which has a primary key 4 digit column (snum). Each value in this column must be unique.

In Forms 4.5 I'm trying to write a procedure to check that a new snum is unique (I.e., has not already been used.)

Can anyone give me some ideas?

I'm very new to this.
