OWS and <TextArea>

OWS 3.0 on HP/UX and Oracle 7.3.3:
I just tried an INSERT from an HTML TextArea box into a column sized varchar2(2000), and I got a:
ORA-01401: inserted value too large for column which surprised me, as there was very little text entered in the TextArea box.
Huh??? Any ideas greatly appreciated.
