running the daemon.pc in the background

I downloaded and compiled the daemon.pc program to allow me to call unix shell scripts from stored procedures. But whenever I try and run this program using nohup it hangs and will not process any of my calls using daemon.execute

Is there any modifications I need to make to the source code to get this to really work as a daemon.

Has anyone set this daemon up to be run by init so it is always running? Or would that be bad because then you couldn't shut down your database?
