Re: Changing an object - alter?

Hi!

Try this:

• Create a temporary table
• And insert the values of your column
• The row of the original-table is simply identified by the rowid create table tmp_tab ( tmp_row, tmp_col ) as select rowid, your_col from your_tab;
• Set your column to null (oracle requires this for type changes) update your_tab set your_col = NULL; commit;
• alter the type of your column alter table your_tab modify your_col char(50);
• refill the converted value for each row update your_tab set your_col = ( select to_char( tmp_col ) from tmp_tab where tmp_row = your_tab.rowid ); commit;
• remove the temporary stuff drop table tmp_tab; -- The type-conversion is not necessary for this case, but if you need one, place it there.
