Changing an object - alter?

Hello,

I am fairly new to Oracle. I have a table in Oracle that was created by importing data into it from Access. The Problem is that when I imported the data the two field that were supposed to be "NUMBER," actually turned out to be CHAR(50) fields. How do I change the objects in these two columns from CHAR to NUMBER? Is it the "alter table" command?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

David Richardson
