I am also having a time understanding the password file.

I have set this up on ORA 7.3.3 under NT. The pwdXXX.ora file exists as a hidden/system file, and is created when you issue the oradim -new command to establish the instance.

After I create the database and open using the internal userid, I will grant sysdba to myself and backup dba, then disable the internal userid. (In order to disable internal, I think you need to use the password file option.)

I can remotely administer the database this way, but signed on as myself as sysdba. Internal is no longer valid.

Other than the elimination on internal and the specification of certain users as sysdba, I know of no other use of the password file.

Good luck
