It's a pet peeve of mine that a lot of companies DO expect their programmers to work without proper reference materials. I am personally aware of a recent case where a manager balked at purchasing more than one copy of a manual set (to be shared by 11 programmers) because the cost was <gasp!> "around $30 a set". The company had just spent almost $30,000 for the software in question and staff training. Go figure!
