I learnt VI a long time ago but the pain still remains. When I took up Oracle and started to use SQL*Plus I felt a very similar pain. I downloaded a shareware product called Golden Retriever made by Mark Ford http://www.tiac.net/users/markford/index.htm which allows me to do everything I could in SQL*Plus but with a friendly interface. You can use restrictions on tables for export.
