MR-O'HARE's LARKIN LETTER

NETWORK SERVER WARS: International Data Corp. reports that in 1996, Microsoft's Windows NT won the battle with Unix. For the first time ever, NT servers shipped exceeded the # of Unix Servers shipped. The score: Windows NT = 725,000 shipped; Unix = 602,000 shipped; Netware shipped 1,100,000 units; OS/2 Warp Server shipped 350,000 units.

Regarding the "year 2000 problem", a study, conducted by the Society for Information Management (SIM), IBM's ISSC and the Business Computer IS department at the University of Texas, indicates several SIM members may be headed for potential disaster. Of the respondents, 1/3 are making reasonable progress; 1/3 are up to a year behind and 1/3 "are simply headed for disaster". The study is entitled "Solving the Year 2000 Computer Date: A Guide and Resource Directory".

An interesting comment from an IT candidate following his resignation from an employer of five years. "So far I have been through three exit interviews. Why is it that you can work for a company for five years and no one asks what you think, then you quit and everyone wants your thoughts and suggestions?"

Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation, expressed strong interest in acquiring Apple Computer. His efforts, however, did not bear fruit. While this is now off the table, Ellison has indicated it may be revisited. This appears to be an effort, by Ellsion, on his own behalf rather than a buyout by Oracle Corp. Stay tuned – who knows what the future will bring? As the old radio show says; "Only the Shadow knows."

A young boy and his father were sitting on their fence enjoying the afternoon sun. A car stopped for directions. After securing the directions, the driver said that his family was moving to the area. The driver went on to say that they came from a very pleasant town full of very friendly people. He asked what the people in this town were like. About the same as where you came from, was the answer. A little later, another car stopped for directions. The driver of this car, also with his family, mentioned they were moving into the area. He said they came from a miserable town full of nasty, unfriendly people. "What are the people around here like?" asked the driver. About the same as where you come from, was the reply. After the car had gone the little boy looked up at his father and asked, "Dad, how come you gave each of those people different answers about what the people around here are like?" The father replied, "Because son, people usually find what they expect. It depends on what glasses they are looking through."

Separate surveys by Computerworld and Zona Research, Inc. indicate that Microsoft's web browser Explorer is making serious inroads on the corporate business of Netscape's Navigator. Computerworld found Navigator losing 10% market-share to Explorer. Many market observers have stated that Netscape should seek a merger with, or sale to, IBM as their only real chance of staying alive. Netscape is the fastest, most successful software startup in history; however, the Microsoft juggernaut is after Netscape's market. A sale to IBM would provide Netscape with resources competitive with Microsoft. (The Microsoft marketing budget for Explorer is larger than Netscape's annual revenues.)
