Need help sending mail from stored procedure in UNIX environment

I'm trying to build and send an e-mail message from a stored PL/SQL procedure in a UNIX environment. The customer does NOT have OracleMail installed, so I need to use the built-in UNIX SMTP mail program. Does anyone have a code fragment that illustrates this concept? Does it involve using the DBMS_PIPE?

Thanks for your help. sab
