Date Question : Have you tried having a when-new-item-instance trigger on the date field setting the format mask to ddmmyy, and a when-validate-item trigger setting it back to dd-mmm-yy .

Validation Question : If validation fails in a field then you should set a flag. A when new-item-instance trigger at block level will fire and if the flag is set the focus can go to wherever you tell it. Validation should obviously not raise form trigger failure if it fails.
