 I think you'll find that the space for MAXLOGFILES entries is reserved in the control files, so you will have to recreate them using ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROL TO TRACE, etc., etc. Have a chat with Oracle support in case this has changed, but as far as I know recreating the control files is your only option (but I'm sure someone will step in if this isn't true! :-))
