Thanks for your suggestions so far, but I've already read the information found in the Oracle Manuals as well as the Oracle Performance Tuning my O'Reilly & Associates.

If anyone knows of another good third party book or magazine articles or has first hand experience on how indexing a referencing foreign key column prevents locking problems, I'm still interested.
