"Pretty ugly" eh. Was it pretty or was it ugly? (Sorry, I get a kick out of that oxymoron.)

It is because the two machines were using different monitor display resolution settings. 14" monitors usually run at 640x480 while 17" run at 800x600 or higher. Using small fonts vs large fonts also cause the forms to display differently.

You have to design the form for a common monitor setting, and then all your users need to stick to that setting. While I don't know which combinations work and which don't, I believe that changing between some settings and others will not screw up the display nearly as bad as you experienced.
