TNS error 12196

I am trying to get crystal reports 5.0 to connect to our oracle 7.x server through ODBC on an NT 4.0 box. I have installed the oracle client (7.3) and can TNSping the oracle server. I also have a custom app written to access the oracle server which works on this client. However, when I try to use one of the ODBC drivers supplied by crystal reports I get error 12196 back from TNS. The text of the message is TNS: recieved an error from TNS. These drivers used to work fine and have just stopped recently (I am not aware of any software changes on the NT box) and I have re-installed both the oracle client s/w and crystal reports to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
