From memory (which certainly could be wrong) there is 25-40 msec of delay added by the modem's bitpump filters. Error control and compression add more. With a test setup of:

    unix box --- modem --- definity pbx --- modem/router

a ping from the unix box to the modem/router was typically in the range of 280 -- 310 msec. PBX connections were analog on the modem side and T1/PRI on the modem/router side. Haven't a clue as to how much of the delay was caused by any particular piece of the setup. That was with error control and compression turned on.
