Many people avoid setting pctincrease to any large value because the extents then grow exponentially out of control (similar to the old game of taking a penny on the first day of the months, doubling the amount on the second, doubling that on the third, etc etc). By the end of the month you have > one million dollars. However, a value of 0 will keep Oracle from coalescing the available freespace. Hence the 'popular' value of '1'.
