It is already in beta on some sites. Release is intended to be quarter
this year but anything could happen.

I think the answer to both your questions is no. You won't need a third
party mapping tool, but you will have to do some work on your existing
system to turn it into an object system.
I suspect that the OO component may be an optional extra.
