Inventory Database Design???

I'm about to start designing an inventory database in Oracle's Designer/2000 and would like to know how other people handle serialized and lot numbered items. The design will need to keep track of inventory as it moves from place to place, is built up into an assembly and then disassembled etc. Also everything will be barcoded. Anybody have some suggestions or tips on how they're doing it?
