Got it!

Turns out that one has to explicitly and separately install _both_ the 16-bit _and_ 32-bit versions of SQLNet on each client from the Workgroup CDROM. Separately. Then you've got to go in and configure the 16bit version of sqlnet like you want it, then go in and set up the 32 bit like you want it. Separately.

Anyway, that crisis is over. Poor Prescott.

Now the ODBC monster is lurking just around the corner, it's many fanged mouth drooling in anticipation...
