DESCRIBE questions

a few simple questions:

we're running

	SQL*Plus: Release 3.1.3.7.1 
	Oracle7 Server Release 7.1.6.2.0
	SvrMgr 2.1.3.0.0

why isn't DESCRIBE available via the server manager? is there an alternate way of doing this from the server manager application?
if i "set pause on" it works for normal SQL commands, pausing after each page, but does not for DESCRIBE. if i describe a long table, it continues to scroll by. on another instance (same version of SQL*Plus, other server version unknown right now, this works fine .. DESCRIBE will also pause after each page) any hints?
