BUT the question is, is that searching done by downloading the entire dictionary into the browser so you can let JavaScript handle the search inside the browser, or will you go back to the server every time he types a character and do the search there and then download a modified section of page and insert it?

If there are limited choices you will generally do the former. If massive choices the latter., and accept the speed penalty, which is probably NOT the machine cycles at the far end, but the transfer delays across the internet.
