I'm a bit late to the part here, but you can apply the patches directly as part of the installation, so no need to install then patch. See second line...

${GRID_HOME}/gridSetup.sh -ignorePrereq -waitforcompletion -silent \   -applyRU ${PATCH_PATH1} \
  -responseFile ${GRID_HOME}/install/response/gridsetup.rsp \   ...

This way you don't need to fake the OS distribution either.
