certs are a marketing tool

for managed services companies , such as Pythian, the marketing folks can tout all the certs

for individuals certs are one way to get someone to look at your CV/Resume

for oracle, certs are a large revenue stream due to required courses.

certs are also good as a syllabus to get you familiar with some technology, though that is certainly not a required method

getting a cert means you somehow managed to pick enough of the correct answers among all the poorly worded answers to pass a test.

certs do not necessarily make one a better DBA.
