Thank you, Mladen - then we'll start our evaluation with OL7.

Is there any particular reason why you didn't mention KVM ( https://www.redhat.com/en/topics/virtualization/what-is-KVM ) for virtualization?

VMWare isn't strategic in our shop. In contrast, we've been having an absolutely positive experience with Hyper-V for hosting SQL Server, but we would like to avoid it for Oracle, as we'd need to deal with yet another team, where it isn't absolutely necessary.

Anybody can share their experiences with OVM?

Glad to hear about your positive impressions of ACFS - for me, the improvements are a testimony of vendor's commitment. Would you know what kind of license is necessary for snapshots?

With regard to OCFS2 I don't think it's an option anyway, as we're striving for a more mainstream stack - once Solaris gets de-supported (or just further pushed to the margin).

Best regards,

Nenad

Hi Nenad!

Me and probably the vast majority of this list would recommend Oracle Linux 7. Not OL 8, it's still not mainstream. For Instance, I was not able to link ACFS driver when I updated the kernel. As for the hypervisor, that is a business choice. The principal ones are VMWare, Hyper-V and OVM. They can all do similar things. That decision is tied to your cloud policy and is probably price and discount based. As for ACFS, I can only say the best things: it's a very reliable, high performance cluster file system. Snapshots require additional license so most of the clients that I work with don't use them. I can attest that ACFS is light years ahead of OCFS2 and performs well, in a reliable manner.

Nenad
