What, if anything, is in the trace file mentioned - /u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/imptest7/imptest71/trace/imptest71_ora_21438.trc - there might be something useful. I'm happy to take s look if there's nothing confidential in it, if necessary.
What's in DB_UNIQUE_NAME and NAME in V$DATABASE?
Also, show parameter login please, theres one there for remote logins, can't quite remember the full name!
If it is looking for the password file, what are you logging in SYS as? Sysdba, sysoper etc?
