Seem that your environment variables, such as PATH and possibly ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_BASE arenot set.

Do you normally run . oraenv (dot space oraenv)? or set the PATH and other variables explicitly in a profile or other script?

Just in case - are you using the correct userid? In many cases, root or other system accounts do not get a chace to set oracle-related encironment variables, as they normally would/should not be used to run oracle-related commands.

Check the output of 'set | grep -i ora' to ensure your environment is set properly.
