stubborn Oracle 12c orabase

orabase keeps reporting the wrong ORACLE_BASE value, tech note 1340176.1 declares that orabase -s is no longer valid as of 12c.

Re-installing Oracle software on this server to fix that one value is not an option.

A​re there any workarounds for this?
