My reply isn’t quite correct?!?!  Wash your mouth out with soap, my lad, or I will in December at UKOUG!!!!  ;)

Seriously, you raise a valid point that I hadn’t mentioned.  However, you can of course use an NFS mount (yes I know the associated issues with that!) in which case my answer was still perfectly correct.  So there! J

If I recall correctly you'll find it is also used when patching agents - or deploying new gold agent images, and that is something you should be doing.

You don't say what your deployment model is, but if you are planning on any sort of HA for your OMS (other than just building the OMS as a single server on an HA Virtual platform) then Pete's reply below isn't quite correct :(. The software library needs to be on shared writeable storage between OMS machines - see https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24628_01/doc.121/e24473/softwarelib.htm#EMADM13187. This can be expensive to provide.

Nope, include it.  It’s free, and saves any concerns about not having it later.  At worst, it means you’ve created a directory that isn’t used.  J

We’re trying to move from OEM 11g to 12cR5.  I don’t recall being prompted about the Software Library during the 11g install, but if I de-select it during the 12c install, I get a warning pop-up that it’s required for “performing key operations within Enterprise Manager”.  However, it seems tied to Patching/Provisioning and we don’t have that management pack.  I can’t find anything specific in any documentation on the Software Library being tied to the Patching/Provisioning management pack, but am a little leery about installing it in case it is.  So I’m wondering if it’s something that should be installed even without the Patching/Provisioning management pack in order for OEM to function, or should it be de-selected during the install unless you have a license for that pack?
