We do have multiple DNS servers at our primary data center and an additional one at a remote data center so I think we are covered there in terms of DNS redundancy.

I think a combination of entries in the /etc/hosts (all application/database servers that make up that particular environment) and DNS caching will take care of our issue. I think the caching may already be set but perhaps the expire time is set too short. I'll work with our Linux Admin to confirm this and get this straighten out.

I really appreciate all the great suggestions and feedback on this!
