Sumit,

Let me guess: Was the file-extension of the online redo log files called ".log", by any chance? Borrowing a legal term, that file-extension with online redo log files is an "attractive nuisance", because it practically begs someone with more permission than knowledge to delete them when they are trying to clear away space in a file-system. After all, how important is a file named ".log", right?

Always use another file-extension, such as ".rdo" or ".dbf", to give even the dullest neatnik a reason to pause and think before using "rm".

As for your first reaction, create an SR with Oracle Support and work with them closely on this.

Support will step through the details with you, but if you are lucky the instance did not crash until a log switch was attempted, and hopefully a successful checkpoint occurred at that time. If that is the case, you might get away with a simple ALTER DATABASE CLEAR LOGFILE command. At worst, you'll have to do an incomplete recovery.

Best wishes and best of luck,

-Tim
