Not running the database in archive log mode means forward recovery is not possible hence if you have to restore you will lose data. In our environment that would be a disaster. Product goes out the door every few minutes. If we had to restore from last night we would have no way to identify product that was shipped and for which we need to bill. Orders would be lost. Warranty claims entered and processed would be lost. Checks would have been cut for which we have no supporting payment claims. Lack of forward recovery would create a mountain of discrepancies that would take months to clear up.

Tom Kyte spends a few paragraphs on the subject in Expert Oracle Database Architecture. Page 108 in the 2nd edition. Generally his stance is that if it’s a production system, it had better be in ARCHIVELOG mode. He then proceeds to defend his position vigorously.

Does any one know of a good document or blog that argues strongly for archive log?

Most of the stuff I see says you can use archive log if you want but you don't have to and if you don't it just means you have to take cold backups and can't do point in time recovery

The way I look at it is point in time recovery is crucial because you will corrupt your database at some point without archive log it's just matter of time, a ticking time bomb.
