This has been common in the past. If I recall correctly 11 can't talk to 8.0, maybe even 8i.

If it's a must you might be able to find a work around, especially if it's not heavily used. At least until the 9i environment can be upgraded.

I'm not for sure if oracle's connection manager can provide this functionality but worth looking into.
