I'm not sure if talking about only PE will be enough to your question, because you can use local disk or SAN for example.

BTW, you can see another good functionality when talking about RHEL6, tuned. With tuned you can set your server according " templates" or just create your personal configuration according your necessity.

Bellow a default sample:

[root_at_rhel01 abrt]# tuned-adm list
Available profiles:

- throughput-performance
- spindown-disk
- virtual-host
- default
- laptop-ac-powersave
- laptop-battery-powersave
- server-powersave
- virtual-guest
- desktop-powersave
- enterprise-storage
- latency-performance

Current active profile: default
[root_at_rhel01 abrt]#

and all related configuration are stored in /etc/tune-profiles
