Hi Michael,

> I've always patched ASM GRID_HOME (non RAC) using the database psu
Sorry if I ask, just to clarify: Did you do that in 11.2.0.3 (the version you mentioned) where ASM resides in the GI home, or was that in pre-11.2 environments where ASM was implemented using the RDBMS binary installation and was treated as a RDBMS home?
Checking the DB PSU 11.2.0.3.11 (Patch 18522512) it's stated that: "If you are installing the PSU to an environment that has a Grid Infrastructure home, note the following: Grid Infrastructure PSU 11.2.0.3.11 Patch 18706488 should be applied to the Grid Infrastructure home and Database home using the readme instructions provided with the patch."
I don't have much experience with patching environments with standalone (non-RAC) ASM, but there shouldn't be much difference since it should also be installed in a GI home, as in a RAC configuration: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24321/oraclerestart.htm#LADBI1220 : With Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2), Oracle ASM is part of an Oracle Grid Infrastructure installation, *either for a cluster, or for a standalone server*.

This MOS note is also very useful "FAQ: OPatch/Patch Questions/Issues for Oracle Clusterware (Grid Infrastructure or CRS) and RAC Environments (Doc ID 1339140.1)":

Can a Database PSU be applied to a clusterware home? No, only CRS PSUs, GI PSUs or other Clusterware/GI patches can be applied to a Clusterware/GI home.

What's included in a GI PSU ?
Unlike other Grid Infrastructure patches (discussed later), 11gR2 GI PSUs contains both GI PSU and Database PSU (YES, both GI and DB PSU) for a particular quarter. For example, 11.2.0.2.2 GI PSU contains both the 11.2.0.2.2 GI PSU and the 11.2.0.2.2 Database PSU. You are able to take note of this when you extract a GI PSU, you will see 2 directories (named with the Patch number) one for the GI PSU and one for the RDBMS PSU.

  • GI PSUs do contain the Database PSU for the corresponding release, e.g. 11.2.0.2.3 GI PSU contains the 11.2.0.2.3 Database PSU
  • Database PSUs hold true to their name

What does a Clusterware/Grid Infrastructure patch contain?

Clusterware and Grid Infrastructure patches have at least two portions, one for the clusterware home, and the other for the Database home(s). Those two portions have same version number. The clusterware home portion is in the top level directory of the unzipped location, while the other portion is in custom/server/<bug#>. For example, if 11.2.0.2.2 GI PSU is unzipped to

/op/db/11.2.0.2/GIPSU2, Grid Infrastructure home portion will be in /op/db/
11.2.0.2/GIPSU2/12311357 and database home specific portion will be in
/op/db/11.2.0.2/GIPSU2/12311357/custom/server/12311357.

So based on the above, the database PSU alone is not enough to patch an 11.2 ASM instance running from a GI home.
