That was lucky in the end! In my case I'm rebuilding now.. but.. since this was my first RAC build, this will give me the opportunity to fine tune my installation process (and document)  before moving to the next environment... of course, that said.. as soon as this installation is completed, I'm planning to shut everything down and get snapshots of both VMs! .. chalk it up to newbie lessons learned..
