Amen to that. I understand the DBA role is always evolving (much like any IT role) but I have worked with DBAs who don't mind doing whatever comes up and what kills me is that these DBAs fail to realize that if they spent that time learning more about the DB they support [instead of being a jack-of-all-trades] their contribution to the business would be much greater. (I'm not talking about those rare DBAs who manage to be experts in their field *and* other fields besides).

I've worked with too many poor/mediocre DBAs who are off doing heaven knows what and thinking that it's good for them or their IT group.
