I've been rm -rf ~/.ssh each time i retry on both servers. Is that good enough to clean it up or are there other files?

Did you ssh-keygen multiple times? IIRC, that can only run once, as it will generate new keys, as the name implies. So when running ssh-keygen again, I believe it invalidates the previous keys. HTH!
