Start with a test environment / throwaway server and begin your upgrade process by playing and documenting!

I would &quot;not&quot; consider going from 5.4 to 6.1 if you are going to go to 6 why would you not go to 6.4?

Going to have to do a complete re-install I believe going from 5.x to 6.x no way to upgrade through a version change I do not believe.

You need some kind of testing grounds to begin with that matches as closely as possible the real environments that you are going to be changing eventually.
