10.2 to 11.2

We are planning to upgrade a 10.2 RAC database to 11.2 rac (unix). As of 11.2 the patches/upgrades install the whole set of binaries. i read some metalink docs that advise to install the binaries in a separate home. I wonder how it will work with voting disks, 2 homes in 11g instead of the 3 homes. If anyone has done this before, can they share a step by step document. TIA.
