You can check out $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart and interpret the shell script. It goes back to Oracle 6 (at least version 9 and 10 does). I believe it looks for sqldba or svrmgrl to determine oracle 6 or 7.

For 7 it sets a variable 'VERSION' to internal... and SQLDBA to svrmgrl... goes to a case statement -- ultimately for 7 it is svrmgrl and connect internal

(for Oracle 6 its sqldba... :) ).
