Nassyam and Oleksander - thanks for your replies! A virtual beer for both of you. I think I can just duplicate from first standby to the second standby, then start Data Guard from the Primary to the second standby. (I can't do cascading standbys, as the first standby will be going away... I forgot to mention that!)

Ended up being much simpler than I thought - isnt it always that way? :)

Now to test it out...

Thanks again

Jerry,

Creating standby database and archive data will be transport from standby to standby is called "Cascaded Standby databases". Note that, Cascading cannot be used prior to 11.2.0.2, However you are in 11.2.0.3 :) Also Data Guard broker is also not supported.

You can refer below documents to configure http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14072_01/server.112/e10700/cascade_appx.htm

From my repository i can see MOS Note: Cascaded standby databases [ID 409013.1] but unfortunately i cannot able to see that document now, Something wrong.

And you can perform refresh from Standby to Standby duplicate, There is no need to connect only Production/Primary database (or) simply you can perform RMAN usual restore also after taking backup from standby.

Hop this Helps.

I need to create a second physical standby from an existing physical standby. If anybody has the steps or could point me in the right direction (e.g. Metalink doc), I would greatly appreciate it! And, would send a virtual beer your way (...a good one, like a Stone IPA<http://www.stonebrewing.com/ipa/>).

  • Environment is 11.2.0.3 Grid / ASM / 11.2.0.3 RAC db
  • Primary is in data center A
  • Existing Standby is in data center B
  • New Standby will be in data center B
  • Network from data center A to data center B is too slow to create the second Standby from the Primary

What's the easiest way? Can I just rman/duplicate the existing Standby to the new Standby, then set up Data Guard from the Primary to the second Standby? (I think I can...)

Thanks very much!

Jerry
