Take a look at Pete Finnigan's PowerPoint presentation on auditing/performance available at http://www.petefinnigan.com/FGAPerformance.pdf. If you work through the questions asked (and observations provided), I think you'll have a better handle on the criteria you need to get from the business as well as helping you determine the possible performance implications and testing requirements. He's got a lot of great stuff there.
